Gateway of India


Constructed during the British Raj in 1924,the colossal Gateway of India in Mumbai today is one of the best place to visit in the city. Placed along the Arabian Sea, it overlooks Mumbai’s harbor. Designed in the Ind-Saracenic architectural style, it was mainly constructed to memorialize the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay.
The complete construction took 4 years. A prime attraction in Mumbai, Gateway of India is a hit destination among domestic as well as foreigners. The area around it is surrounded with vendors selling street snacks and other items, photographers and balloon sellers. This attraction attracts crowd all-day long. Placed in Colaba area of South Mumbai, it is very close to Elephanta caves which is another popular sightseeing option.

Elephanta Caves

Situated at a 10 km radius from Gateway of India is one of the major tourist places in Mumbai, the Elephanta Caves. The caves are said to be one of the oldest rock cut structures in the country and is a perfect example of archaic Indian art associated to the cult of Lord Shiva. It is reckoned that the caves were adorned with sculptures between in 6th or the 8th century. The island on which the caves are built was originally known as Gharapuri and is a quiet and picturesque island with green foliage and harmless primates. The three-headed Shiva sculpture called Maheshmurti is the main attraction of this island. Apart from it the sculptures of Shiva, in the ‘Shiva Nataraja’ and ‘Ardhanarishvara’ forms are also worth seeing in Elephanta Caves.

Juhu beach
Probably one of the most visited places in Mumbai, Juhu Beach is situated in Ville Parle. Juhu Beach comes to life mostly in the evening, when people from all walks of life visit here to enjoy sunset, play in the water and treat their taste buds with street food like Bhel Puri and Pav Bhaji.

Marine Drive

Known as Marine Drive, this tourist spot has also been called Sonapur by the locals of the city. Marine Drive is a 3km long stretch that links Nariman Point to Babulnath, and is situated at the foot of Malabar Hill. Large crowds of people come to this place to stride along the walkway and to view the setting sun at dusk.Marine Drive is also referred to as ‘Queen’s necklace’, because the street lights make the road look like a string of pearls and create an illusion of a necklace, when viewed at night from an elevated point. Towards the northern end of Marine Drive lies one of the oldest beaches in Mumbai, Chowpatty Beach, which is famous for its bazaars and fast food and snacks such as Bhel Puri, Paav Bhaji, etc.

Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Among other tourist places in Rajasthan, Mehrangarh Fort is probably the largest fort that displays the grandeur of the Rajputs. It rises 125 metres high above the Blue city of Jodhpur and contains within itself plenty of mysteries and legends. Mehrangarh Fort is also popular for the artistry of construction of the various mahals inside the fort complex that must be visited.

Chittorgarh Fort, Chittorgarh

This fort is the largest in all of India and was built in the 7th century over an area of 2.8 sq. kilometres. The fort’s highest elevation point is 1,075 metres above sea level. But size isn’t everything; the fort complex contains within itself palaces, gardens and temples that have great historical significance as well.

Pushkar Lake, Pushkar

Pushkar is considered as the King of pilgrimage sites in India. Located on the shores of the lake, Pushkar is one of the oldest cities of India and has retained an old world charm that cannot be observed anywhere else but here. The lake is considered sacred because of which Pushkar is visited by thousands of people every year. Pushkar is also famed as the location of the Pushkar Mela, an annual camel fair which exhibits the vibrant colours and culture of Rajasthan.
